Asbestos Hides a Multitude of Sins

The asbestos is finally gone! We can see some things more clearly but unfortunately, it has also exposed some problems.

While the house looks ghastly, it is nice to know the site is safer to work on with all the hazardous material gone. The asbestos removal team did give us a fright. They said they had forgotten to check the composition of the wall paper/paper mache in the front bedroom when they had done the initial inspection. We didn’t touch much of it as it was very hard to remove and we were planning to cover the walls in plasterboard but we had given it a go. Thankfully it was cleared of asbestos when they checked it.

With all the walls gone and the ceiling as well, we can finally get a look at that extra bit of wall between the second bedroom and the bathroom.

It seems even more bizarre with nothing around it.

Hopefully we will be able to demolish it and give ourselves a little more room for the bathroom remodelling. It doesn’t look structural but we won’t know until we can look at it in person (these photos are courtesy of my father-in-law).

There is quite a lot of rot in the bathroom wall behind the shower and the vanity. The better part of the wall will need to be replaced.

The corner post is also rotted.

We hope to be able to put up the cladding but first that wall will have to be removed and rebuilt. We will also have to check the rest of the studs for any rot or damage. The plumbing will have to be redone so that it is contained neatly in the wall, as is the usual practice for house plumbing.

That is all for this short update! We will be doing more work in the coming couple of weeks so stay tuned!
