Change of Plans…

I thought I would give a short update on some things that have been going on since we have been at the house last. So those plans I posted last time… we changed them. Someone suggested we make a change so the new plans now look like this:

The latest plans have a significant addition.

Yes, if you looked carefully, there are now two bathrooms. We are going to use the old doorway to what we nicknamed “The Narnia Cupboard” (that really tiny, useless waste of space) and make it an ensuite from that bedroom. Having a house with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms should command a higher rent as most house with 3 bedrooms have only 1 bathroom. Our house should stand out with that crucial difference.

Shopping

With now 2 bathrooms to shop for, we spent half a day on the weekend shopping for bathroom fittings. Everything is white with chrome tapware and towel rails. But we also decided to visit a local salvage yard for some older style doors. We didn’t want anything too modern looking and to order them in would have cost us at least $350 a piece. When we need 5 doors, it adds up quickly. The doors don’t all look exactly the same but they are similar enough.

A rather hodge podge line up of doors.
The doors on the reverse.

The yellow door reversed is an off white colour. The design looks better from the off white side than the yellow. They will all require a lot of work. By the feel of it, they have all been painted with an oil based paint. We will also need to patch the various holes and dents. But, each was only $120, so the work of stripping them is offset by a fairly significant saving. I’m excited to see how they clean up!

Our collection of door handles.

Lastly…

We also found some beautiful older style door handles!

Yes, there are only 4 door handles and there are 5 doors. We plan to use the much shorter door as a cavity slider at this stage so it will need a different style of door handle. We will need to do some cleaning of them but they should look quite good with the larger plates. I think the handle on the door to the front bedroom is actually black, but we are trying to keep the same style, rather than trying to match exactly.

I should be able to do an update with cladding and framing when we are there in a couple of weeks. Keep an eye out for that and until then, hasta luego!
