House Plans

Our last day was spent tidying up and doing a few extra jobs. When I headed down to the site after breakfast, the linoleum in the redesigned area had been pulled up already. Or at least the top layer had been. Typical – there were two layers on the floor. The second one came up just as I got there and the smell was revolting. The concrete underneath had obviously had water issues. My father-in-law was going to get an opinion on it.

The concrete was heavily stained. You can also make out where it appears to have had extra laid next to an original slab.

We had thought perhaps we could frame up a new wall to replace the rotten frame we removed the first day but the footings all have to be redone. For some reason, the concrete footings were built on top of pieces of lumber:

This footing is still in good shape.
This one, not so much.

There are multiple slabs making up the entire area and a corner of the old toilet slab had cracked when the wall frame came down. Originally, we were just going to clean up the cracked part….

A little more than just the corner went.

…. but in the end, the entire piece was broken up and dumped in the trailer. The local dump was open for a few hours so two loads of concrete, gravel and broken limestone was hauled away. We also threw in the smashed up tiles from the bathroom, of which there was quite a lot, as of course there wasn’t just one layer of tile:

There was originally a slightly smaller terracotta tile on the floor and it looked like a tiny lavender layer under that.

A small amount of framing in the kitchen was removed to make it a little more functional for an eating area:

There is no designated dining room, so the kitchen needs to be able to accommodate a table.

We measured and marked out our floor plan on the concrete now the linoleum was gone.

To the right is the laundry, with the washing machine, tub and dryer locations marked out. In the centre is the toilet room, which is separate from the rest of the bathroom. In line with the toilet is the shower, while the bath tub is marked to go in the alcove created by the two short stone walls we have to keep. The vanity is in the space on the left.

I think there has been a slight change since we sprayed all those lines. The bath and shower will likely swap places. There will be a fair amount of plumbing rearrangement required and none of the concrete slabs are the same height. The larger one in the back of the above photo is particularly unlevel and will need to be either ground down or dug up. If a paper plan is more your style, here you are:

That was about all we accomplished this trip. It started to rain and we wanted to get the stone unloaded at the dump before it got any heavier. Hopefully next time we will be able to actually do some building instead of just destroying stuff!

Thank you again for reading and I will speak to you next time!
