I Hate Paper Mache

But first I promised a closer look at the wooden peg/nail combination that secured the skirting boards to the stone walls.

The pegs certainly did their job to hold the skirting boards to the wall – they weren’t easy to remove. Either the nails eventually pulled free from the wooden pegs or the pegs themselves pulled out of the stone.

I went back to chiselling the paper mache off the wall in the lounge room. An hour and a half later and I had almost reached the top of the crack:

The wall does look much better without the paper mache.

After morning tea, I finished that crack and started on the next one. It came off a little easier and I an hour later I had it all gone, along with a small patch on the adjacent wall. We are going to attempt to replaster before painting it, instead of putting up plasterboard.

The cracks look pretty daunting without their paper mache mask.

While I worked on the paper mache, my husband and father-in-law added a few more layers to the new stone wall. They also took the saw to a stone block jutting out the exterior wall:

The remnant of the sawn block can be seen up on the right, now surrounded by mortar. We do have those two higher blocks to cut flush with the wall.
The wall as seen from the front bedroom.

We do also have two large bricks that will need to be dealt with. You can see them at the very top of the photo above – they run parallel to the wall instead of perpendicular. As yet, we are not quite how we are going to trim them – a saw will be a slow but possibly also the only option.

We did a short day today, after my father-in-law was called out to fix an ice machine that makes ice for the local meatworks and didn’t return home until 2.30am last night. It was also 40C today here and while windy, the breeze didn’t seem to be reaching inside the hosue. But we are pretty much finished the demolition work in the old portion of the house. On the way out the door, we were discussing what to do with the front porch area.

As you can see, there used to be a frame around the entire window.

We obviously need to repaint the front wall, as the top of the wall, which used to be above a ceiling, is yellow, while the rest of the wall is white. Once we are home, I will pick up some paint swatches to decide on some colours but the plan is to repaint the bottom strip in grey again and the wall white. We will rebuild the frame around the window and paint it grey as well.

That is all from me for this year. Happy New Year to all my readers and thank you for being here!
