We Are Starting to Run Out of Jobs

Well, jobs we can actually do anyway. We are waiting on the asbestos crew to come now that they got a quote to us for us to accept last night. We are waiting on our order of gyprock and an order for 80 sqm of ceiling insulation. We can’t frame up our bedroom wall until the ceiling goes in and we can’t plan out our bathroom/toilet/laundry area until we can see that strange brick wall on the back of that useless little cupboard to decide whether it can be safely removed or not. So we have mostly been cleaning up to make the site safe for the asbestos crew to work in and able to easily access the hazardous materials. I showed some photos of some of that yesterday but here are a couple of others:

There was plenty of rot behind the vanity as well. We hope to repurpose at least the sink top.
The kids gleefully tossed all the shower fittings in the rubbish bin.
Laundry tub is also gone.

The laundry tub caused us considerable frustration. As you can see in the below photograph, the tub is held up with some somewhat rusted metal brackets. The screws refused to undo so the angle grinder came out. We sliced through the side supports (and I managed to accidentally grab the hot metal when the plastic tub slid down over it). The tub was still sitting in a support ring but we couldn’t lift in out due to the tapware and the back of the ring appear to be bolted to the wall but we couldn’t locate the other end of the bolt. We hacksawed the plumbing, which meant we could bend the metal ring down enough to clear the taps with the plastic tub. The bolt refused to budge but the angle grinder made short work of it. The asbestos team will take the rest.

The metal brackets holding the plastic tub did not cooperate in coming apart.

We also put up the main part of the air conditioner:

The centre air conditioner unit.

Now we were given the all clear on the linoleum in the hallway, we decided to pull it up. It happened to be glued to the floor and that little patch of lino took the three of us nearly half an hour to scrape and pull off the floor. We had the heat gun out to melt the glue (and ourselves in the process), we had to keep walking through the plaster dust to stop us sticking to floor and the lino ripped in several places. Eventually we freed the horrendous stuff from the floor. It actually pulled up some of the wood in a couple places but we are hopeful it will sand off so we can still use the floorboards.

The splintered area looks worse than it is because the timbers have been stained and the splinters are lighter in colour.
We now have a very sticky patch of floor right in the hallway.

We also spent 45 minutes in the blazing sun loading the trailer from the wood pile.

Our before woodpile
And after!

The back yard looks much neater without the larger pile of wood. The other lengths didn’t fit in the trailer and we filled two loads. At the end of the day, we even took out the old verandah posts:

It is amazing what a difference just cleaning up can make to a space.

The final job we had to do for the asbestos team was to take down the blinds in the lounge room:

We will save the blinds to put back up later.

One more half day for this trip tomorrow morning – maybe it won’t be so hot!

Hasta luego!
