We Have Lights! And a New Roof!

It’s been a minute since I’ve had any updates! We have been extremely busy with family visiting from out of town, we spent 4 days camping with friends in one of our beautiful state parks, plus I performed in a guitar orchestra during the mid-year school holidays. But we finally made it down to our project last weekend and I have plenty of photos to show you!

Four Almost Finished Rooms

The trim looks great in First Snow and contrasts well with the Billy the Kid on the walls. This is the original door in the front bedroom.
I think the grey provides good contrast without being too dark.
That door on the other hand is not original – it was one of the ones we bought from the salvage yard. My father-in-law replicated the simpler frame style for the door architrave for the master bedroom, third bedroom and hallway.
Bedroom 3 has a small bulkhead for the air conditioner ducting route into the kitchen.
The lounge room looks bright and open, especially with the high ceilings and the multiple down lights/can lights.

No, we don’t have the electricity connected – the generator was powering the lights so I could do some cutting in around the trim. There are a couple of small things to finish – the two vents in the above photo need painting, the blinds need to be rehung and the doors also need to be hung (a couple need another coat of paint). But the obvious missing element is the flooring. We are leaning towards vinyl but a few other big jobs in the back half needed attention first….

Rear Half Update

The kitchen had a persistent leak.

It has been raining a fair bit and the kitchen has had a leak in the ceiling for who knows how long. There was water damage in that corner when we bought the house and we discovered a hole had completely rusted through the tin roof.

The pipework is completed inside and ready for concreting.
The outside pipework is mostly done.
The trench did seem to get wider since I was there last….

But Importantly – New Roof

The building material backlog is gradually easing. We were able to get the new sheet iron for the roof, plus several bales of insulation. We were only able to redo the back half of the roof this weekend. The rear is essentially in two parts – a steeper slope that covers the back of the original building and a flatter section over the added on areas. We also designed the flatter section to cover the verandah as well. It took a little time to get the original wooden facia off, especially since we had to work over the plumbing trench. But eventually the (slimy!) facia was off and we started taking off the old sheet iron. My father-in-law and the plumber worked up on the roof, while my husband and I did all the ground work to keep them supplied with tools, fixings and iron and carry away the old roof.

The old facia was tricky to remove, especially as we had to be very careful not to let it fall on this window.
I did take a few photos from inside, but as they started to remove sheets closer and closer to the kitchen, I bailed out to avoid ending up under a hail of nails!
We insulated from above as we went along. For once, I wasn’t the one doing it!
The new sheet iron looks so much better.
We have a covered verandah at last, one that doesn’t look like it is made out of compressed shredded paper…..
Once the concreting is done, the wall frames can be built and a ceiling added.
Voila! I present… a shiny new roof and no more water leaks!

I hope you have enjoyed this little update. We hope to have the house completed by the end of the year. Next on the list is the remainder of the roof and the wet area concreting. Thank you for following along – hasta luego!
